Overview

Beta-defensin 3 (hBD-3) is an antimicrobial peptide of approximately 45 amino acids with potent activity against a wide range of pathogens, including antibiotic-resistant strains. It acts by permeabilizing microbial membranes and modulating host immune responses.

Mechanism of Action

Therapeutic applications include topical antimicrobial therapy and vaccine adjuvants.

Research Summary & Key Findings

In vitro and animal studies have demonstrated hBD-3 efficacy against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida species. Translation to clinical use has been limited by challenges in large-scale synthesis and formulation stability, with no approved products to date.
