01 · Overview
Somatropin is recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) consisting of 191 amino acids identical in sequence to endogenous pituitary growth hormone. It binds to growth hormone receptors on target tissues to stimulate linear growth, protein synthesis, lipolysis, and carbohydrate metabolism.
Genotropin is one of several branded somatropin products; its FDA label covers pediatric growth failure due to growth hormone deficiency, Prader-Willi syndrome, small for gestational age, Turner syndrome, and idiopathic short stature, as well as adult growth hormone deficiency.
02 · Research summary & key findings
Genotropin was first approved by the FDA in 1995, with indications expanded over time. In the KIGS registry of 83,803 children treated with Genotropin, serious adverse events occurred in 3.7 percent, and treatment increased height and near-adult height across both deficiency and non-deficiency conditions (PMID 36102184). In adults with growth hormone deficiency, a meta-analysis of placebo-controlled trials found growth hormone increased lean body mass by about 2.6 kg and reduced fat mass, total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol (PMID 24810900).
