Melanotan II
Overview
A synthetic cyclic analog of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) that non-selectively activates melanocortin receptors MC1R through MC5R. Melanotan II stimulates melanogenesis for skin tanning via MC1R, modulates sexual arousal through MC3R/MC4R in the hypothalamus, and reduces appetite through central MC4R activation.
Mechanism of Action
It is not FDA-approved and carries significant safety concerns.
Research Summary & Key Findings
Research demonstrated effective UV-independent melanogenesis and photoprotective effects. Also showed erectogenic effects in clinical studies, leading to development of PT-141. Safety concerns include nausea, facial flushing, potential for melanocyte dysregulation, and unregulated product quality. Not approved by any major regulatory agency.
Clinical Status
Melanotan II is in the research phase with limited clinical data in humans. Current evidence is primarily derived from preclinical (animal or in vitro) studies.
