Overview

A neuropeptide encoded by the KISS1 gene that serves as the master upstream regulator of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. Kisspeptin activates GPR54 (KISS1R) on GnRH neurons, stimulating gonadotropin-releasing hormone secretion and subsequent LH and FSH release.

Mechanism of Action

It plays a critical role in puberty onset, reproductive function, and fertility regulation.

Research Summary & Key Findings

Identified as essential for puberty initiation and reproductive function (loss-of-function mutations cause hypogonadotropic hypogonadism). Clinical studies show potential for controlled ovarian stimulation in IVF with lower OHSS risk. Kisspeptin-54 administration triggers predictable LH surges for egg maturation (Dhillo et al., J Clin Invest, 2012).
