Epithalon (Epitalon)
Overview
A synthetic tetrapeptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) based on the natural epithalamin peptide produced by the pineal gland. Epithalon activates telomerase, the enzyme responsible for maintaining telomere length, thereby potentially extending cellular replicative capacity.
Mechanism of Action
It also stimulates melatonin production and modulates neuroendocrine system function associated with aging.
Research Summary & Key Findings
Studies by Khavinson et al. demonstrated telomerase activation in human somatic cells and elongation of telomeres. Rodent studies showed increased lifespan by 13-25%. Clinical observations in elderly patients suggested improvements in melatonin production and immune function biomarkers.
Clinical Status
Epithalon (Epitalon) is in the research phase with limited clinical data in humans. Current evidence is primarily derived from preclinical (animal or in vitro) studies.
